1) What pathway workshop the work is from?

Jewellery

2) What is its function? Please explain and be specific does it address a practical or decorative need or convey a message or emotion… perhaps it does more than one thing if so, what else does it do?

This piece of jewellery I created explores the relationship between a jewellery and the person wearing it. I wanted to express feeling of pain. I was inspired by the structure of neck braces, how they appear so restricting and painful, I imagined the feeling of wearing a neck braces is as if someone had a bunch of sharp metal under your chin in order for you to keep it up. Within this piece, I wanted to evoke an eery emotion, I want to put the role of the jewellery as the threatening object, or the “antagonist” character of the relationship. Additionally, I thought about how ironic it would be to turn jewellery as something painful because jewellery is also an aspect of power and social status, and that relates to some people feeling pain because they are too focused on that idea of status.

3) Describe the process of developing the work. Were there stages you were instructed to go through? What kind of restrictions, if any, were incorporated into the workshop? for example were you asked to only use certain materials or processes? Did you feel that this process helped with the development and making of the work and why?

The process began when we were asked to brainstorm ideas for the 3 words “Suspend” “surround” and “support”, when I heard the word support it reminded me of medical equipments that is used to support certain parts of your body. I thought about how interesting it would be to take inspiration from a medical tool and turn it into jewellery. As I was looking around for materials in the shop, I found a bunch of safety pins. The concept of a safety pin always confuses me, I have always thought that it is very ironic that they call it a “safety pin— it still has a sharp needle. This moment of confusion, gave me an idea to contrast the nature of jewellery; something unharmful that sits delicately on your skin into something that’s risky. There were restrictions to follow in terms of materials, therefore I knew that I should be smart in choosing my materials, luckily the safety pins were easy to attach. The restrictions have made an aadvantage in helping me develop better ideas, I initially wanted to use yarn, clear paper and etc, however the restrictions lead meet be more experimental and at the end,, I decided to cut our cardboard,, pierce a hole using the safety pins and poke them through to create a nice construction of the necklace band.

4) How do you gauge the success of this work? What are the criteria you feel are important markers of success with work in this pathway?

I like the fact that my piece showed ambition in terms of incorporating it with the body, Before attaching the safety pins to my ear, I did not feel as if my piece was elevated enough, and I think that this feature really made me feel like my piece is strong.

5) What was it about the workshop that you feel suits your creative personality?

I felt like this workshop suited my creative personality because I love working with materials and manipulating them into any construction of some sort, especially ones that you can wear on you. This workshop was very hands on with materials and it was nice how random everyday materials that you would not expect, could be turned into a statement accessory piece. I liked how in this workshop I can see my ideas slowly building up, as I created my jewellery,, the experimentation part of this workshop was another reason why I liked it, it forces me to be ambitious knowing that the outcome might turn out completely different,, if not better due to material and rule restrictions. Lastly another reason why this workshop suited my creative personalityy is the fact that we were creating something for the body. In my opinion creating something for the body gives me a very intimate and personal feel to the work, because what you put on your body says a lot about you, once it is on the body the meaning and worth sort of changes.
